Burris & Simpson Family 1917 - Tom,OK

Photo taken 1917: Five (5) children from John Burris and Delia Burris family (CF Roll# 2859 and 2860). Took a picture with neighbor’s children down the road. The other children’s parents were Della Liggins-Simpson and Lewis Simpson (CF Roll# 2847). Tom, OK is located in McCurtain County.

Doris Burris Williamson took picture of Pine Ridge Church during the Burris Family Reunion Event. The Burris, Cole, Liggins, Simpson, and Butler Families attended a church service that was held the weekend of the family reunion event. 

Delia Coleman-Burris Donated 1 Acre of Land for Pine Ridge Church

Land Allotment document as shown. Exhibition (shows where Delia Burris (C.F. Roll# 2860) donated an acre of  land for Pine Ridge Church. It’s also noted that Pine Ridge Church at one time stood directly next to Pine Ridge School before the church was torn down.  

Pine Ridge School - Tom, Oklahoma

The original Pine Ridge School is now known as Pine Ridge Community Center in Tom, OK. Children in the Tom, Harris, Kullitucklo, and Chili Flat communities all attended Pine Ridge School grade K-8.

Enslaved on "Tanyard" Plantation

There are many branches on the Burris Family Tree. John Burris (CF Roll# 2959) extends from his parents’ Dave Burris & Ruth Ann Cole-Burris (born est, 1830s CF #743). Delia Coleman-Burris’s parents are John Coleman and Arey Butler-Coleman. These family members were enslaved by Chief Peter Pitchlynn (Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation), Sophia Pitchlynn (Mother of Peter P. Pitchlynn), and Sam Garland. 1910 US Federal Census (Township 3 McCurtain County, Oklahoma) listed Ruth Ann Burris age 80.
